Jai’s Heart: A Legacy of Love
Jai’ was a son with a heart of gold—kind, caring, and always ready to help others. Tragically, he was taken from us too soon after surviving a senseless act of gun violence on July 12th, 2023. For two weeks, he fought with hope and determination, but we lost him on July 27th, 2023, at just 21 years old.

Those moments of losing Jai’ felt like an eternity.
How could a college student who loved everyone end up here? He was calling on me for help before I heard his voice for the final time on this side of heaven. I was able to give him that final hug as he asked, “Ma, please put your arms around me”—not knowing it would be the last time I’d see his smile or hear his deep voice again.
Jai’ was revived after coding, but in my heart... I knew.
He didn’t survive the trauma—and I believe it could have been prevented.
As a mother and a nurse practitioner, I was torn between two deeply personal roles. I remained calm, trusting the medical professionals around him—but something in my spirit didn’t feel right. I sensed it. I questioned it. But I stayed in my place as “Ma.”
Still, it felt like my calmness and trust were mistaken for weakness.
Like my voice didn’t matter.
I’ll never forget the anguish of watching my son fight for his life—or the guilt that followed.
No mother should ever have to endure that.
While we can’t prevent every tragedy, we can do our part to speak up, raise awareness, and create safer spaces for the ones most at risk.
Jai’s life was full of love, hope, and promise.
Though his time was cut short, his legacy lives on—and it matters.
Through Jai’s Heart Inc., I am committed to honoring my son’s memory through action:
- Protecting other families
- Empowering youth
- Giving voice to those who feel unheard
- And offering hope to those navigating their own heartbreak

2025 Scholarship Opportunity

We’re proud to announce the launch of our first-ever scholarship opportunity, now open for applications from April 14, 2025 at 12:00 AM to June 3, 2025 at 5:00 PM.
This scholarship will be awarded to one or two minority students from either Jordan-Matthews High School or Asheboro High School, supporting their journey toward higher education and a brighter future.
Recipient(s) will be announced on July 27, 2025.

Our workshops tackle real-world issues that prepare youth for life’s challenges—emotionally, socially, and mentally. Through honest conversation and practical guidance, we help students face what’s happening around them and within them.

We aim to equip youth with the tools they need to thrive in today’s society.
Mentorship Program
Empowering Youth Through Guidance
We pair youth and young adults with dedicated mentors who guide them through life’s challenges. From personal development and career guidance to navigating peer pressure and building resilience, our mentorship program is designed to make a lasting impact.
- Duration: Mentorships typically last 6 months to a year.
- Focus Areas: Personal growth, educational support, and life skills development.
Safe Spaces Initiative
A Place to Be Heard and Supported
We’re creating environments where youth can feel secure and supported. Through group sessions, one-on-one mentoring, and open discussions, we provide:
- Mental health resources.
- Peer and adult guidance.
- Support networks for youth navigating life’s pressures.

The Safe Space Initiative includes:
- “Check-in” circles where young people and families can express what’s on their hearts.
- Pop-up community conversations focused on grief, healing, and belonging.
- Special events to support mental and emotional wellness.
This is a space to be real—free from judgment, full of compassion.
